Materials Intern 

We are looking for a Materials Engineering Intern for our Westbury NY facility. In this role you will be leading process improvement and optimization efforts, supporting engineering & operations, while also taking in a range of responsibilities that are necessary for the day-to-day operation of our production process. As a part of your internship, you will lead a process improvement project following the Six Sigma DMAIC approach. You will also be involved in other aspects of the production processes, that involve, but not limited to, production automation, equipment troubleshooting, process engineering, CAPEX projects & operations management. You will also be involved for updating and modifying documents such as work instructions, standard operating procedures, non-order based spending (NOBS), addressing non conformances and maintaining manufacturing process plans. This internship position will provide the candidate with practical experience related to their major of study that will compliment and expand upon classroom learning. The candidate will gain exposure to all aspects of manufacturing environment & provide a deep insight into thermal spray powder technology.

  

Your Responsibilities:

  • Lead a process improvement project with clear definition of the goal and a standardized approach using six sigma DMAIC methodology. Identify critical improvement areas, non-value-added activities and yield improvement opportunities and develop an action plan to address them.
  • Assist in CAPEX projects as needed, right from NOBS creation to validation of the project. 
  • Assist in the utilization of PLC’s, relays, sensors, and switches to automate production processes with the help of other engineers.
  • Assist process engineering with process troubleshooting, addressing NCRs and maintaining manufacturing process plans (MPPs).
  • Assist the operations team on any priority engineering support as needed.
  • Update and modify work instructions, SOP’s, manufacturing process plans, and other documents as needed. Participate in daily activities & meetings as needed.

 

Your Profile:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other related degree at an accredited university
  • Familiarity with process troubleshooting and optimization is preferred. Previous exposure with Six Sigma methodologies is highly preferred.
  • Proficient across all Microsoft platforms.
  • Initiative-taking & ability to work independently & with teams as required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to train others.
  • Excellent analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to analyze complex data sets, recognize/quantify trends, and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to generate and clearly present technical data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to take direction from others.

Oerlikon is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the current compensation range for this position, which is $20 to $28 per hour. Some positions within Oerlikon may also offer eligibility to participate in a discretionary incentive program. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for the role will be based on a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, internal equity, job location, work experience, education, training, certifications, licenses, etc. Therefore, as compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each individual, it is likely that not all applicants will be hired at the highest end of the listed compensation range. Our total compensation package goes beyond base compensation and it will include a competitive benefits package starting with 2 weeks paid time off accrued on a monthly basis, 12 holidays, 48 hours personal/sick time (exception for NY where we follow State law,) medical, dental, vision, 401K, holidays, pet insurance and tuition reimbursement all effective day one of hire (excludes Intern and Temporary roles).
