R&D Intern 
 

 

We are looking for a Research & Development Intern for our Westbury, NY facility. In this role you will Support the R&D organization gaining hands-on experience in the field of thermal spray technology, materials manufacturing & testing. Key activities will include assisting engineers in the R&D test lab as well as Coating Solutions Center. 

Responsibilities may include sample preparation for the High Temperature Coating Test lab, data acquisition, preparation of presentations.  Additionally, support may be required in preparing surfaces for coating, operating thermal spray equipment, documenting process parameters, and collaborating with the team to optimize coating quality.

This role creates an opportunity to learn about this specialized field and contribute a global R&D team.

 

Your Responsibilities:

  • Assist with test set-up and following established lab test protocols.  Inclusive of sample preparation, testing monitoring and progress updates
  • Perform all duties associated with booth set-up and substrate preparation for coating deposition trials 
  • Support with tooling and masking set-ups;  providing input to design as necessary
  • Additional support in the R&D powder manufacturing  lab as-necessary
  • Execute work packages under guidance of R&D engineer to ensure customer specifications are met.
  • Ensure all process documentation has been recorded with a concise summary of the work task efforts.  
  • Interface with Project Engineers as well as Materials R&D Scientists to review scope of project plans

 

Your Profile:

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant technical degree such as materials science, mechanical engineering.
  • Interest in surface engineering, coatings and relevant testing techniques with a basic understanding of material properties.   
  • Possess the ability to adhere to OM safety practices and procedures.
  • Possess the ability to follow direction and guidance from R&D engineers ; inclusive of operation of thermal spray equipment.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communications skills with attention to detail.
  • Must be proficient in using business and communications software (preferably Word, Excel, PowerPoint, common Windows operating systems, and Outlook)

Some positions within Oerlikon may also offer eligibility to participate in a discretionary incentive program. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for the role will be based on a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, internal equity, job location, work experience, education, training, certifications, licenses, etc. Therefore, as compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each individual, it is likely that not all applicants will be hired at the highest end of the listed compensation range.
