Defense Industry Segment Lead & Business Development Manager
We are looking for a Defense Industry Segment Lead & Business Development Manager for Oerlikon. This person could work out of one of our locations in North Carolina, New York, or Michigan. In this role you will be responsible for generating new business in the Defense Industry, monitoring industry developments, and developing a roadmap for our applications to achieve Oerlikon’s strategic goals. This position will collaborate with multiple stakeholders within Oerlikon to understand the industry and define the company’s growth objectives in the aerospace and defense industry.
Your Responsibilities:
- High-level networking with senior management within targeted customer organizations (SAM) to develop strategies and business plans to grow Oerlikon Surface Solutions (OSS) - global scope with focus Americas.
- Managing commercial and technology aspects to align customer needs with current and to be developed future OSS Applications, Develop Strategic Account plans.
- Drive Revenue growth by establishing robust project pipeline with different key customers and across all OSS offering.
Industry Segment Lead
- Representative of the industry within OSS: Be the voice of the customer in the market with close collaboration with country presidents and DSOs to define strategy for key countries/regions.
- Product and Service Portfolio Definition: Define the product and service portfolio for the industry market, regions, key accounts, and other customers.
- Industry Trends and Strategic Roadmap: Capture Defense Industry trends relevant to OSS to develop a multifaceted strategic roadmap that identifies the next SAM potential, milestones, investments, activities, resource allocation, tools, processes, and organizational dependencies needed to contribute positively to the Division's 5-year plan and achieve goals.
- Value-Add Selling Approach: Develop a value-add selling approach/business model in alignment with sales excellence in conjunction with operational capabilities.
- Customer and Brand Value Proposition: Develop with MarCom a customer and brand value proposition that supports and builds Oerlikon's market positioning.
- R&D Project Boards: Be a member of R&D project boards and support key project realization across OSS and regional projects. Work with business line R&D groups to align strategies and capabilities and keep them informed on technology developments.
Development Manager
- Major OSS Account Ownership: Take ownership of major OSS accounts. (SAM)
- Lead Regional KAMs: Provide overall leadership for regionally managed Key Account Managers.
- (KAMs) in the specific vertical Defense Drive Strategic Initiatives: Monitor strategic initiatives in respective countries (Mainly Americas, UK, France) to achieve maximum growth and profitability in the account.
- C-Level Networking: Engage in C-level networking within the SAM to drive top-down and bottom-up innovation.
- Contract Management: Handle global contracts, support NDAs, LTAs, and JDAs.
- Complex Pricing Proposals: Support complex pricing proposals across regions and business units.
Your Profile:
- Bachelor’s degree in natural science, materials, engineering, or economics is required
- 5+ years of progressive experience in business development in the defense industry
- Proven commercial track record in a multinational defense industry company
- Prior Military experience is strongly preferred
- Strong customer orientation and international experience in business and marketing strategy development with strategic, analytical, and conceptual strengths.
- Dedicated and convincing personality, capable of establishing effective working relationships with diverse personalities, regardless of formal structures.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to engage and integrate others.
- Highly motivated, self-driven, open, and positive mindset with experience in international and cross-cultural business environments.

Oerlikon is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the current compensation range for this position, which is $150,000 up to $250,000 per year, plus bonus incentive plan. Some positions within Oerlikon may also offer eligibility to participate in a discretionary incentive program. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for the role will be based on a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, internal equity, job location, work experience, education, training, certifications, licenses, etc. Therefore, as compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each individual, it is likely that not all applicants will be hired at the highest end of the listed compensation range. Our total compensation package goes beyond base compensation and it will include a competitive benefits package starting with 2 weeks paid time off accrued on a monthly basis, 12 holidays, 48 hours personal/sick time (exception for NY where we follow State law,) medical, dental, vision, 401K, holidays, pet insurance and tuition reimbursement all effective day one of hire.
